Petroleum refining refers to the process which used the chemical engineering and other facilities in refineries, to converting crude oil into useful products, such as gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, liquefied petroleum gas, kerosene, heating oil and fuel oil. Crude oil is composed of thousands of different hydrocarbons molecules, all with different boiling points, so they can be separated through the process of refining. The process is divided into three basic steps: separation, conversion, and treatment.


Separation


The primary process for separating the hydrocarbon components of crude oil is fractional distillation. Crude oil is heated in a furnace so that hydrocarbons changed into vapour. The mixture of vapour and unvaporized oil passes from the furnace into the bottom of a distillation column. The oil vapour rise up through the column, and are condensed to a liquid when they touch the condenser at the top of the tower. Then the liquids are drawn off the distilling column at specific heights.

Conversion


Conversion is simply the process of changing on kind of hydrocarbon into another. Cracking is the process of taking heavier, higher-boiling fractions from the crude oil distillation by converting them into lighter and lower boiling, more valuable products.
