Why separate fresh water from seawater ?

Distillation is the earliest form of separation fresh water from seawater. In a distillation process, water is boiled and become steam, then cooled, and it is condensed back to water again. Thus distillation involves in adding heat energy to seawater in order to vaporize the water and then removing the heat energy from the steam to condense it into fresh water.
